An overheated engine is not good, no matter how you look at it. When you’re on the road making deliveries, time is money, and an overheated engine is the last thing you want slowing you down. Not only could an overheated engine slow you down, but it could cause harm to the engine, potentially costing you more time and money down the road. There are many things that could cause your truck to overheat, but here are a few of the main causes for an overheated rig.

Faulty thermostat

If the thermostat isn’t opening and closing properly, the engine can start to overheat as a result. Fortunately, this is a common issue that semi-truckers face, and all you might need to do is replace the thermostat, which can be done quickly by Massey Towing and Truck Service roadside assistance.

Leaking radiator

Having a cracked radiator or a faulty radiator cap can lead to engine trouble as well. The radiator controls the truck’s cooling system, and a leak could prevent the cooling system from pressurizing correctly. If left unchecked, this could lead to a burst hose or a steam leak, so make sure to check the radiator if your engine heat levels have been higher than normal.

Leaking coolant

Having the right amount of fresh coolant is important for the cooling system to function properly. If your truck is running low on coolant, there may be a crack in the system. Coolant can leak from multiple parts of a semi-truck so the leak may be hard to find at first, but a roadside assistant can help identify the leak.

Blown head gasket

If you’re driving and suddenly you see your temperature gauge skyrocket and steam start rising from under the hood, then there is a high chance that you blew your head gasket. If you check the engine and see bubbling coolant around the gasket, then you will need to replace that engine part.

Failing water pump

This part of the truck is often overlooked as a source of overheating because it is an internal mechanism, but if the pump is worn out or leaky then the result is an overheated engine.
