Dead batteries are a common problem when it comes to vehicle maintenance, but it can still be difficult to predict when your battery will die. When you’re on a long road trip, the last thing you want is to come back to your truck only to find the battery is dead. Here are a few things to look out for that might let you know your battery is dying before it’s too late.

Slow startup

The power needed to start RV’s and semi-trucks is quite substantial. A healthy battery should start up the vehicle easily, but if a battery is low on juice, it will take a few moments longer to turn over. If this is the case, then it is time to check your battery and possibly get it replaced.

Poorly Functioning Electrical Components

Poorly functioning electrical components are another indicator that you may be in need of a new battery. Headlights, turn signals, and the radio are just a few of the parts of your vehicle that rely solely on the battery to operate. If the lights are dimmer, or the clock on your dashboard starts running slower, then it means your battery is getting weaker.

Misshapen battery box

After driving so many miles on the road, it’s easy for frequent travelers and truck drivers to lose track of how long they’ve had their current battery. Batteries are known to die suddenly once they’ve reached their maximum life span, which can strand unprepared travelers. One thing that you always need to check before you leave is the shape of your battery. Is it swollen, or bulging in any areas? The fluctuation in temperature alongside the chemical reactions inside the battery can lead to inflammation in the battery. If this reaction has gotten to the point of misshaping your battery’s container then it is important that you change it out as soon as possible.

Be proactive

One easy way to make sure that you can avoid a dead battery in the middle of the road is to always check its health before you head out on any long-distance trips. A well-charged car battery should run at about 12.5 to 14.5 volts. However, if you do find yourself in a situation where your battery is dead and you don’t know what to do, don’t panic. Help is only a phone call away.
